The Research Institute for Transport Economics (OBET) was established on October 1, 1965 in Warsaw, as an independent organisational unit of the PKP (Polish State Railways). Together with the Central Institute for Research and Development of Railway Engineering (currently, Railway Scientific and Technical Centre - the CNTK) OBET has created the research support facility for railways in Poland.
The objective of OBET at the start of its activity was to carry out scientific research related to railway transport, as well as to support the PKP management in resolving some organisational, legal, financial and economic problems of the railways.
As a consequence of the restructuring of railways in Poland, following a decision of the Minister of transport and Maritime Economy of January 1, 1993, OBET was separated from the PKP structure.
Thus, since January 1, 1993 OBET is an independent and self-financing entity - a state enterprise. The statutory activity of OBET consists at present of carrying out scientific research and providing consulting services for the whole transport sector. The Institute possesses great experience and significant output in resolving financial, economic, organisational and legal issues associated with transport. While its offer is directed to the whole transport system, the Institute particularly focuses on the rail and road transport.
The completion of about 1250 scientific research works, analyses and scientific evaluations during 1965-2004, proves the importance of the Institute and its usefulness for the national economy.
OBET closely co-operates with numerous domestic and foreign research institutes, universities, consulting companies and organisations acting on behalf of transport sector.
